Spotting pure henna

Be careful with "black henna"
"Black henna" stains jet black instantly and often lasts for weeks — pure henna simply cannot do that. The usual reason is para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a hair-dye chemical that can cause severe allergic reactions, blistering and scarring on skin, sometimes only days later. If you notice redness, itching, blistering or swelling after a henna application, see a doctor promptly.
Timing and how the colour develops
- Leave the paste on for 2 to 6 hours — the longer, the bolder the colour
- Right after scraping it off the stain looks orange — that is normal
- The final, darkest colour only shows after 24 to 48 hours
- Warmth while the paste sits (warm socks, a scarf) deepens the colour further
How long it lasts and aftercare
- Avoid water on the area for the first few hours after removing the paste
- Apply an oil regularly (olive oil or a dedicated henna aftercare oil)
- Exfoliating, saunas and long baths fade the colour faster
- Direct sun also fades henna faster than shaded skin
- Lasts about 1 to 3 weeks depending on aftercare and where it is
